More people should realize that Matthias, in finding Martin’s sword, went above and beyond the call of duty. Martin hid his sword on the rooftop. Matthias solved that riddle, only to find the sword had been stolen. He then went on to take on a mad Sparra king, live as a hostage, fall off the Abbey roof, almost get devoured by a cat and an owl, and slay a monstrous snake to find the sword. None of this was part of Martin’s original plan. Moral of the story, Matthias is a boss and no one can convince me otherwise.
THIS NEEDS MORE NOTES BECAUSE MY SMOL SON
Or was it part of the original plan? If Matthias hadn’t faced all those other challenges, he wouldn’t have been able to face Cluny. Yes, he would have had the guts. We all know that. But he wouldn’t have had the experiences with fighting and surviving that the quest for the sword gave him, and he probably would have died. Just a thought.
Interesting point! The reasons I always assumed it was Matthias’s own volition are a) Martin tells him not to go and holds him back and b) it reflects a certain independence and stubbornness in his character that is reminiscent of Martin. But like you said, Martin is a mastermind, it’s possible he could have orchestrated the whole thing. Personally I like the thought of Matthias disobeying him; it speaks more truly to his character and what he has in common with Martin.
Honestly I can go either way with it! But it does seem like Martin always has a master plan for everyone and treats all the heroes a little differently based on what they need.
And I suppose he could have just intended for Matthias to face Cluny after the latter had been driven half-mad by Martin-induced nightmares.
Whether it was planned or not though, I think the quest was definitely necessary for Matthias to become a true warrior! I can only imagine young no-quest Matthias trying to rush Cluny straight off and it going very, very badly.
