On Tris:
There are two types of emperors in Daemirra, the Divine and the Mundane. Tris is the former, her father Montegro was the latter.
A Divine Emperor will have signs of approval from the Queen of Heaven in their horoscope (horoscopes being essential in daily life, it’s necessary to know which of the nameless gods one can call on for protection. Unlike our zodiac, these are not stable dates but change at random as the nameless gods fight for prominence and thus each child must have a horoscope done for them at birth. All midwifes are also trained in augury, and all of them travel with an assistant to double-check the results)
Tris was born to The Destroyer, her father to The Hunter. It’s much more common for emperors to be born to The Leader, but it’s not set in stone.
It is said that a Divine Emperor must always rule the country, and a Mundane Emperor may only step in if there is no suitable Divine Heir.
Montegro was the oldest of his five siblings. Two of his younger siblings were Divine. Strangely, neither of them reached their 10th birthday. Likewise, a Divine cousin also succumbed to a mysterious illness. Montegro’s other two siblings died in a boating accident. How many of these deaths can be attributed to him is up for debate. And so, he assumed the throne upon his father’s death.
Of course, he would need to abdicate the second that Tris came of age. It’s unlikely that the curse he cast was intended to freeze her in time. Most likely it was supposed to be another illness. An accident. Anything to assure that she did not reach her majority. But certainly the Queen of Heaven was displeased with his actions and Tris remained – eternally youthful, eternally the Rightful Heir. Unable to be rid of her, or to declare her a bastard, Montegro instead exiled her to a country estate.
To give Tris credit, she did wait until her eighteenth birthday before she stormed the castle and had her father forcibly removed from the throne. No one was really sad to see him go.
On Bird:
If the varying races bothered to listen to one another on matters of religion, they would realize that there hundreds of gods puttering around, tweaking things.
Bird is certainly, unknowingly, the daughter of one of these, but which one….not even the six Queens know. She’s one of theirs, they know. Not created, but a true flesh-and-blood child from the days when the Drezhein were the companions and lovers of the gods. There have been far too many of such children to keep track of, even one as unusual as her. She does not have the features of whichever goddess is her mother nor any visible ties to the Drezhein – which her father definitely was.
One thing the Queens don’t have time for is a mystery, thus Bird had her memories removed and was left “washed ashore” in the mortal world. Their only kindness was leaving her in Daemirra, generally acknowledged to be the best place to live.
Despite her memory loss, Bird is capable, intelligent, and hard-working. She and Tris took to one another instantly, and Bird has become an integral sight in the palace.
That’s strange enough – after all, she doesn’t even have a horoscope or a proper name. Even stranger is her affection for Bermuda, whose laid-back attitude and slacker tendencies are well-known. Most people are glad that the children take after their mother.
No one seems to have noticed that reality bends itself to her will at times. Then again, mortals really shouldn’t be able to notice gods at their work.
