None of the kids have pets on the surface because the shenlai exist and Anthem doesn’t want to deal with animals but really because he was way too attached to his pet rabbit/familiar that got murdered when he was a kid and he’s never gotten over it.

Yeah that violent period is sort of the beginning of it. The real change is after Anthem dies. Cyan was willing to kill him but after that she’s stressed and traumatized as hell and just up and leaves, dumps the younger siblings at Sonya’s house and gets the fuck out of dodge.

And suddenly Ithea is gone and Anthem is gone and Charlie is gone and Cyan is gone and Sonya is a useless drunkard who doesn’t know the first thing about kids and is too wrapped up in her own bullshit to learn.

And the younger kids are so young, and confused, and they need someone to take care of them. Gavin could have done what his older siblings did and ran, take his portion of the inheritance and leave, but instead he went into protective big brother mode and left all the childish shit behind, thus becoming single-handedly responsible for how well the younger kids came out (even if he did end up running an organized crime empire later). I think probably Ro was the kicker there, he’d always been attached to her and she needed him so he stayed around and realized that actually the rest of the younger sibs are pretty cool too.

I could totally shoot the shit about Gavins Bully Days because that’s fucked up boarding school level bullshit but that’s more me ahaha … maybe whats the worst thing gavin and charlie have ever done to each other … or whats the worst thing anthems ever done to someone in the family… does anthem even have regrets?? does the crime fam do shit like demand people cut off their fingers if they fuck up

Gavin’s bully days are so good and definitely related to jealousy and a messed up home life and man I have delved into that before but I could do it again. Although he’s Anthem’s favorite son, and he’s very smart and very capable, he never gets as much attention as Charlie.

And it doesn’t even matter that it’s negative attention! He was a kid, and his parents by-passed him in favor of another sibling, and that stings. He works super hard and he gets the best grades and does everything right and he still can’t bypass Charlie.

He can’t throw temper tantrums at home, but he can take his anger out on the other kids at school and so he does and he is glorious at it. And it’s still not enough to get his parents’ attention.

But again, at school, Gavin is KING. The teachers never catch him being a bully and they never believe the other students because He’s Such A Good Boy. But Charlie struggles at school and with his temper, well, it’s easy to turn the teachers and other students against him. Gavin is directly responsible for making Charlie’s time at school a living hell. 

For his part, Charlie doesn’t have enough leverage to be that sneaky. But he’s older and stronger, so I think he picks fights with Gavin a lot. He also probably destroys a lot of Gavin’s shit just because he can.

Anthem has one major regret: he wasn’t there when Ithea died. They were supposed to go confront Ithian together, and he was too busy doing his usual bullshit and was late. He never knew Ithea went without him on purpose, he doesn’t live long enough. He may have beat the shit out of Charlie for suggesting it, but he really does blame himself for her death. Also he became quite violent with the kids after her death which he didn’t live long enough to regret but definitely qualifies for “terrible shit”.

Crime fam absolutely does shit like that. Cyan mostly does her own thing these days but if you fuck up you get a visit from her and it never goes well. If you fuck up too much, your last appointment is with Kaite, the executioner. She’s humane about it, but you’re still dead.
